What's my air conditioner?
Type the model number from the label and see what you have: the make and type, its size, which gas it runs on and roughly how old it is. And whether we can look after it.
Type the model number from the label
Where the label is
Every unit has a rating label with its model number. It's usually in one of these places, and a phone torch helps.
- Indoor unit: the right-hand end, or under the front panel, which lifts up from the bottom edge. Switch the system off at the remote before you open it.
- Outdoor unit: the end with the pipe connections, sometimes the front or the top. It also lists the gas and its weight.
- Not on the remote control: that has its own number, which won't identify the system.
- Can't reach it? A photo is fine. Send it to samuel@chillston.com and we'll read it for you.
R32, R410A or R22
What new systems use, and what most systems fitted in the last few years run on.
Used by most systems until R32 took over. Still fine to service and repair. Since 2025, new single-room systems can't be sold with it, so a system on R410A is at least a few years old.
Banned from new heat pump systems from 2004, and from any servicing since 2015. The system can run until it leaks or breaks, but no one can legally top it up or replace its gas.
What we will and won't take on
So you know before you book, not when we arrive.
- Wall-mounted and floor-standing systems in homes, any make
- Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Bosch, LG, Samsung and most others, whoever fitted them.
- We won't try to keep an R22 system going
- It can't legally be refilled, so no service can fix it for long. If yours is R22, we'll tell you honestly and price a replacement instead.
- Ducted, ceiling cassette and commercial systems aren't for us
- They need a commercial air conditioning contractor, and we'd rather say so now than send someone who isn't the right fit.
- Air-to-water heat pumps aren't air conditioning
- They heat radiators and hot water, and we don't service them. The manufacturer can point you to an approved installer.
What people ask about their systems
Where is the model number on an air conditioner?
On the rating label. On an indoor unit it is usually on the right-hand end, or under the front panel, which lifts up. On an outdoor unit it is on the end by the pipe connections. The remote control doesn't carry it.
Why does the gas matter?
It tells you roughly how old the system is and what can be done with it. R32 is what today's systems use. R410A was used before it and can still be serviced and repaired. R22 hasn't been allowed for servicing since 2015, so a system that uses it can't be refilled, only replaced.
Is my system too old to service?
Age alone doesn't decide it. What matters is its condition, whether parts are still made for it, and which gas it uses. A Health Check service tells you, and if it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so.
What if the label is missing or I can't read it?
Send a photo of both units, and of the remote control, to samuel@chillston.com. Most systems can be identified that way. If we can't identify a system, we'll tell you before booking anything.
Do you service makes you don't install?
Yes. Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Bosch, LG, Samsung and most others, as long as it's a wall-mounted or floor-standing system in a home.
Let's get your system looked after
A Health Check service is £175 for one indoor unit, plus £50 for each additional unit on the same visit. If you've decoded your model number above, it's already filled in below.
