The valley and the hills need different answers

Wycombe sits in a chalk valley with villages spread along the ridges above it, and that geography decides most of the job. Victorian terraces down in the valley from the town's furniture-making years; postwar and modern houses up in Hazlemere, Downley, Totteridge, Terriers and Flackwell Heath. We're based locally, which means we already know the roads, the parking and what tends to be behind the walls.

The valley

Victorian terraces and tight access

The town centre streets and the terraced housing built for the chair-making trade. Smaller, older, closer together, and a job that rewards planning.

  • Terraced and semi-detached Victorian housing, typically solid brick and often nine inches thick
  • Rear access can be limited to a shared alley or nothing at all — sometimes the only route is through the house, which we plan and protect for properly
  • Outdoor units on rear elevations or small yards, sited to keep noise away from neighbouring windows
  • Usually single-room systems: a bedroom, a home office, or the room that faces the afternoon sun
  • Parking is genuinely difficult on some streets, so we sort it at survey rather than on the morning
The hills & villages

Modern housing, garden offices, easy access

Hazlemere, Downley, Totteridge, Terriers, Flackwell Heath and out towards the Hughenden valley. Larger plots, driveways, and the most straightforward installations we do.

  • Postwar and modern housing with cavity walls that core cleanly and are sleeved properly
  • Driveways and side access, so no kit carried through your house
  • Garden offices and loft conversions — the two rooms we're asked about most up here
  • Steep drives and sloping gardens affect where plant can sensibly go and how we get it there, which we work out in advance
  • Generally permitted development, though we check your specific property before quoting
Behind the plaster

What we expect to find in a High Wycombe wall

Core drilling is where a careless installer does damage that can't be undone. Knowing what's likely behind the wall before the drill comes out is most of the job.

Solid brick Victorian

The valley standard. Thick, often lime-mortared, and unforgiving if drilled fast — it's done slowly and wet with the inside face protected.

Chalk and flint

Found in older and more rural properties around the Hughenden valley, Naphill and Bradenham. The hardest wall to core cleanly: flint shatters and pushes the bit off line. A patient job.

Cavity, postwar

Hazlemere, Downley, Totteridge and the modern estates. Straightforward, provided the penetration is properly sleeved and sealed.

Modern timber frame

Newer builds and infill plots. Fixings into structure rather than board, and the breather membrane resealed correctly afterwards.

High Wycombe-specific things we check before quoting

Steep ground and access
Wycombe's valley sides are genuinely steep, and a sloping garden or a steep drive changes where an outdoor unit can go and how we get it there. We establish this at survey so nothing is improvised on install day.
Rear access on terraces
Some valley streets have no rear access at all. Where the route runs through the house, we protect it properly — floor coverings down before tools come in, and cleaned beyond where we worked.
Parking in the valley streets
Permit zones and narrow roads make this a real consideration. We plan the van position in advance rather than circling on the day.
The Chilterns National Landscape
Much of the surrounding countryside sits within it. It doesn't prevent installation, but it does mean careful thought about anything visible externally.

What changes the price

Every quote is a fixed price for your specific home, not a range we adjust later. These are the things that move it:

  • Access — steep drives, sloping gardens, and valley terraces with no rear access all change the day
  • Wall construction — Victorian solid brick and chalk-and-flint are far slower to core than postwar cavity
  • Pipe run length — how far the room sits from the only sensible outdoor position
  • Getting equipment in — where the only route is through the house, we plan and protect it properly
  • Electrical work — whether your consumer unit has a spare way, or a new circuit is needed
  • Unit choice — the standard indoor head, or the slimline designer range

We'll tell you which of these apply at the survey — and the price we quote is the price you pay.

Chillston Care

You won't have to remember

Air conditioning needs servicing once a year. That's not our rule — every manufacturer makes warranty cover conditional on it.

You can book that yourself each year, or become a member and never think about it again:

  • When we're busiest, members come first
  • We contact you when the Health Check is due — not the other way round
  • One call-out a year, no charge to attend
  • Price fixed for your first 12 months, then 30 days’ notice of any change

A one-off Health Check is £175, and £50 for each additional unit on the same visit. Membership is £144 a year for one unit, includes a call-out, and we keep the warranty paperwork for you. Whatever size the system, membership costs less than booking the same servicing visit by visit.

High Wycombe questions

What people in High Wycombe ask us

Can you install air conditioning in a Victorian terrace?

Yes, and we do it regularly. The considerations are solid-wall drilling, where the outdoor unit can go with limited rear access, and how we get equipment in and out without marking your house. All three are settled at survey. The full guide to planning permission →

Our drive is steep — is that a problem?

Not usually, but it needs planning. Steep and sloping ground affects both where the outdoor unit can sit and how we move equipment, which is exactly what the survey is for.

Is my property in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Much of the area around Wycombe is. It doesn't prevent installation, but it does raise the bar on siting anything visible. We confirm the position for your address before quoting. The full guide to planning permission →

Can you cool a loft conversion or garden office?

Yes — those are the two most common jobs we're called to on the hills. Both tend to be the hottest space in summer and the coldest in winter, and a single system fixes both.

Are you actually local?

Yes. We're based just outside Wycombe rather than covering it from another county, which is why we already know the streets, the parking and what's usually behind the walls.
