Air Conditioning Installation in Amersham
Careful, discreet cooling and heating for Amersham homes — from Old Town period properties to the houses on the hill.
Old Amersham and Amersham-on-the-Hill are not the same job
The two halves of Amersham are separated by about a mile and about four hundred years. The old town sits down in the Misbourne valley — medieval and Georgian, heavily listed, inside a conservation area and the Chilterns National Landscape. On the Hill is Metroland: brick semis and detached houses built out after the Metropolitan Railway arrived. Same name, entirely different installation.
One of the most listed streets in the county
The High Street, the Market Hall and the lanes around them. Genuinely historic fabric, where consent is closer to the norm than the exception.
- A very high density of listed buildings — for many properties here, consent is required rather than optional
- Timber framing and very old brickwork, sometimes considerably older than the frontage suggests
- Outdoor units off the street elevation without exception, screened where possible
- Chilterns National Landscape adds weight to how visible anything on the outside will be
- Where a building genuinely isn't suitable we say so — we would rather tell you than take the job
Metroland houses, and the hot bedroom problem
Sycamore Road, the streets around the station and out towards Chesham Bois. Among the most straightforward work we do, and the half of Amersham we're called to most.
- 1930s semis and detached houses on regular plots with side access and driveways
- Cavity walls that core cleanly and are sleeved properly at the penetration
- Bedrooms under the roof that become genuinely unbearable in summer — the most common reason people here call us
- Loft conversions and rear extensions the original heating was never designed to cope with
- Usually permitted development, though we still check your specific property before quoting
What we expect to find in a Amersham wall
Core drilling is where a careless installer does damage that can't be undone. Knowing what's likely behind the wall before the drill comes out is most of the job.
Historic timber frame
Found in Old Amersham and treated with real caution. We establish what we're going through before any drill comes out, and change the route rather than risk the fabric.
Very old solid brick
Sometimes centuries old, often in lime mortar and rarely uniform. Drilled slowly, wet, with the internal finish protected throughout.
1930s cavity
The on-the-Hill standard and the easiest wall we work with — provided the penetration is sleeved and sealed rather than simply drilled through.
Modern extension fabric
Blockwork, render and occasionally timber frame on newer rear extensions. Fixings into structure, membranes resealed correctly.
Amersham-specific things we check before quoting
- Listed status in the old town
- Amersham High Street has an unusually high concentration of listed buildings. We check the register for your address and tell you the position honestly before any quote is issued.
- The Chilterns National Landscape
- Much of the area around Amersham sits within it. It doesn't prevent installation, but it does raise the bar on how visible external plant should be — which is a standard we'd apply anyway.
- Overheating loft conversions
- The single most common Amersham enquiry. A converted loft with rooflights can be ten degrees warmer than the room below, and it's the room a system pays for itself in fastest.
- Access and parking in the valley
- The old town's High Street and lanes can be difficult for a van. We establish access at survey so install day runs to time.
Single-room comfort
One discreet indoor unit for a bedroom, office or sitting room. Surveyed, installed and commissioned in a day.
Whole-home multi-split
Two to five rooms from one quiet outdoor unit, designed around your home before we drill a hole.
Servicing & repair
Annual servicing that keeps your warranty valid — for systems we fitted and ones we didn't.
What changes the price
Every quote is a fixed price for your specific home, not a range we adjust later. These are the things that move it:
- Pipe run length — how far the room sits from the only sensible outdoor position
- Wall construction — historic fabric in the old town is slow, careful work; 1930s cavity on the Hill is straightforward
- Consent — Old Amersham's listed density means permission is often required rather than optional
- Loft and roof-space runs — converted lofts often need longer, more awkward routes than the room suggests
- Electrical work — whether your consumer unit has a spare way, or a new circuit is needed
- Unit choice — the standard indoor head, or the slimline designer range
We'll tell you which of these apply at the survey — and the price we quote is the price you pay.
You won't have to remember
Air conditioning needs servicing once a year. That's not our rule — every manufacturer makes warranty cover conditional on it.
You can book that yourself each year, or become a member and never think about it again:
- When we're busiest, members come first
- We contact you when the Health Check is due — not the other way round
- One call-out a year, no charge to attend
- Price fixed for your first 12 months, then 30 days’ notice of any change
A one-off Health Check is £175, and £50 for each additional unit on the same visit. Membership is £144 a year for one unit, includes a call-out, and we keep the warranty paperwork for you. Whatever size the system, membership costs less than booking the same servicing visit by visit.
Ask about it with your surveyFor one indoor unit. £3 a month for each additional unit.

We photograph every Amersham installation
No stock photography, and nothing borrowed from another installer with a Amersham caption stuck on it. This page shows real Amersham work, photographed on the day with the owner's permission — which means it fills up job by job.
Everything else on this page — the walls, the planning rules, the prices — is exactly as it will be for your survey.
What people in Amersham ask us
Can you fit air conditioning to a listed building in Old Amersham?
Sometimes, with listed building consent and very careful siting — and sometimes the answer is genuinely no. We check the register for your property and tell you before you spend anything. The full guide to planning permission →
Does it matter which part of Amersham I'm in?
Quite a lot, yes. Old Amersham brings listed and conservation considerations; Amersham-on-the-Hill is usually straightforward permitted development. We confirm the position for your specific address either way. The full guide to planning permission →
My 1930s bedroom is unbearable in summer — what's the fix?
A single wall-mounted unit, correctly sized for the room's volume and glazing, typically installed in a day. It's the most common job we do in Amersham-on-the-Hill and it also heats the room efficiently in winter.
Does the Chilterns National Landscape designation affect me?
It doesn't prevent installation, but it does mean external units should be sited thoughtfully. That's how we'd approach it regardless.
Can you cool a loft conversion?
Yes, and it's often the room that benefits most. Rooflights and a warm roof space make lofts the hottest room in the house, and a properly sized system fixes it in both directions — cool in summer, warm in winter.
